What’s a good app to learn Korean?

A good app for learning Korean lets you hear every sentence, explains grammar in small steps, brings words back at the right time and gets you speaking. Jinjja World does all of that as a game: free, with zero prior knowledge, in your browser or as an app, and with other K-fans learning alongside you.

Instead of tapping through flashcards, you get around Seoul: you order at a café, take the metro, go to auditions and meet people. Every character speaks Korean with you, with romanization and a translation in your language right next to it.

Eight things a good Korean app has to do

This is how you can tell whether an app will really move you forward, whichever one you choose. And this is how Jinjja World handles each point.

  1. Let you hear every sentence

    In Jinjja World

You learn Korean by ear. Over 22,000 sentences are spoken: by a female voice, a male voice and slowly.

  2. Let you start without Hangul

    In Jinjja World

Romanization and translation are always there. You learn the script in the Hangul Atelier when you’re ready.

  3. Teach grammar in small steps

    In Jinjja World

287 grammar points based on the NIKL curriculum. Every lesson: experience it, discover it, name it, practice it, say it yourself.

  4. Review at the right time

    In Jinjja World

Words come back before you forget them. A word only moves up when you recognize it again at different times.

  5. Get you speaking

    In Jinjja World

In auditions you perform scenes, and in voice chat you talk with up to eight people.

  6. Use real situations

    In Jinjja World

23 everyday settings, from the café and the metro to a concert, with more than 480 learning goals.

  7. Show honest progress

    In Jinjja World

Instead of just points, four scores show where you stand: communication, vocabulary, grammar and speaking.

  8. Give you a reason to come back

    In Jinjja World

Quests, friends, fan clubs and events: you come back because something is happening, not just to keep a streak.

Listen

Have a listen: this is the app

Every sentence has audio. Tap the speaker, then “Slow”, and repeat after it. That’s exactly how it works in the game.

A day with the app

How Korean fits into your day

An app only helps if you open it. In Jinjja World short sessions are enough, because the game remembers what’s next. A day could look like this:

  1. 5 min

On the train: a listening duel

In the showdown you hear a word and pick its meaning. Get it right and your Dokkaebi attacks.

  2. 10 min

On your break: a task at the café

Order, understand, reply. The characters speak Korean with you, and romanization and translation help.

  3. 15 min

In the evening: a grammar lesson

At Mijae University you put sentence cards in order, hear the sentence and say it yourself.

  4. Any time

    Later: with others

In voice chat, in the Game House or in your fan club you use what you’ve learned with real people.

Whatever you forget, Jinjja brings back before it’s gone. That’s why every short session counts.

The learning app where you’re not alone

Most apps leave you alone with your phone. Jinjja World is an MMO: everyone plays in the same world at the same time, with fans from many countries who are learning the same things you are.

  • Voice chat with up to eight people
  • Chat as speech bubbles above your heads, emotes like 화이팅! and 대박!
  • The Game House with four party games and 20 topic decks
  • Fan clubs with a clubhouse, comeback parties and movie nights
  • Language duels with leaderboards

You can still learn in peace whenever you like. The others are there when you feel like company.

Who it’s for

Who is the app for?

For anyone who wants to understand and speak Korean, starting from zero. Five typical starting points:

You’re starting from scratch

No Hangul, no tables: your first sentence comes in your first lesson, with audio and romanization.

You’re planning a trip to Korea

Café, metro, hotel, pharmacy: you practice exactly the situations waiting for you in Seoul.

You already study with a book or course

Jinjja World adds to your course: you experience grammar in real situations and review along the way.

FAQ about the Korean app

Is there a free app to learn Korean?

Yes. Jinjja World is free, with no subscription, also during the Open Beta. You earn won, the in-game currency, by playing.

Is Jinjja World on the App Store or Google Play?

Not yet; versions for both stores are in the works. Until then you install the app straight from your browser: on Android with Chrome, on iPhone and iPad with Safari via “Add to Home Screen”.

Can I start as a complete beginner?

Yes. You don’t need any prior knowledge. Your first sentence comes in your first grammar lesson: “저는 커피를 마셔요” (I drink coffee), with audio, romanization and translation.

Do I have to read Hangul?

No. Hangul always appears next to the romanization, so you pick up the script along the way.

How long does it take to learn Korean with an app?

That depends on how often you practice. Short sessions on many days do more than one long evening a week, because Jinjja reviews words and grammar at the right intervals. Four scores in the game show you how far you’ve come.

Will the app teach me to speak?

Yes. You can hear every sentence slowly and repeat it. In auditions you perform scenes, and in voice chat you talk with others. For that you need a microphone; for everything else you don’t.

Does the app work offline?

No. Jinjja World is an online game: everyone plays in the same world at the same time, and that needs a connection.

Do I need an account?

Yes, a free Jinjja account with your email address. Your progress is tied to it, the same on phone, tablet and computer.

How is it different from vocabulary apps?

You don’t learn with single flashcards but in places, with people and tasks in a game world, together with other learners. You’ll find the full comparison on the learning page.

Which devices does the app run on?

On Android phones, iPhone, iPad, Windows and Mac, in your browser or as an app on your home screen. On a phone you play in landscape mode.

Which languages is the game available in?

Menus, help and translations are available in Deutsch, English, Español, Português (Brasil) and Français. The spoken language is Korean.

Can I play with friends on other devices?

Yes. Desktop, tablet and phone share the same world, so you simply meet up in the game.
